Bruins Win Twin Bill

31 October 2009 - When the Tribute to Fallen Heroes tournament got rained out, the Bruins faced off against the Dominion Baseball Academy Dragons in a lazy double header on a warm but gloomy Saturday afternoon.  Neither team mustered much offense, but every player on the Bruins pitched an inning or two, and the defense was solid.  Though the event lacked the intensity of tournament play, the Bruins did win both games.  Willy McInerney was a defensive standout at catcher in the second game, making a great play on a bunt, throwing out a runner on a steal attempt, and picking off another - all when the game was very close.   [Results]

State Champs Again!

Nations Baseball 2009 Fall Elite State Championship 11 Oct 2009 - The Bruins continued their winning ways this weekend by going undefeated in pool play at the Virginia Sports Complex on Saturday and earning the top-seed heading into Sunday's Championship play at the Nations Baseball Fall Elite 13u State Championship tournament.  Brandon Barbery brings the heat! In fact, the Bruins won mercy-rule-shortened contests in every game including both the semi-final and championship games.  All said and done, the Bruins outscored their opponents 51-8 over their four games this weekend.  In addition to claiming the Fall title, this championship earned the Bruins a paid bid to the Nations Baseball Spring State Tournament.

Beach Sizzle

25 May 2009 - The team had an excellent experience this weekend at the Sports at the Beach 2009 Beach Sizzle Memorial Day Tournament which featured 25 teams in our division from all over the Eastern United States.  We played great on Saturday recording two big wins, then dropped a couple of close pool-play games on Sunday.

In Monday's championship play, we started by knocking off the tournament's #3 seed in the opening round, cruised past a local Deleware team in the quarterfinals, and redeemed ourselves in the semifinals by beating one of the teams that had beaten us in pool-play.  The team was firing on all cylinders with timely hitting up and down the lineup, some excellent pitching, and our usual solid defense, but rain spoiled our shot at the #1 seed Arena Starz and the Championship.  Nevertheless, it was a great tournament experience that won't soon be forgotten.  [Results]

Bring The Heat

3 May 2009 - Rain spoiled our chance to face off against the South Chester Express team that ranks just higher than the Bruins in the USSSA Power Rankings.  The Bruins came out on fire in the VSC Bring The Heat tournament in Ruther Glenn, winning both pool games easily, and earning them the #2 seed going into Sunday's championship play.  Unfortunately, the Sunday games were rained out, and the team had to settle for second place.  [Results]

Southern Classic NIT

26 April 2009 - The Bruins split their two pool play games at the Southern Classic NIT in Raleigh, NC.  On Saturday we lost a well-played, close game to the Carolina Heat, the tournament's eventual champions, then won a slug-fest against a strong-hitting Wayne Mavericks team.  In Sunday's semi-final game, the team got off track and came up on the short end of another slug-fest, then rebounded to win the 3rd place game before heading home.  [Results]

Big Swing Champions

Big Swing Champions 5 April 2009 - In their very first 12U tournament of the spring season, the Bruins went undefeated in pool play to capture the top seed at the Triple Crown Sports Big Swing tournament, and then continued their winning ways to take the championship.  The semifinal was a shortened 12-2 contest, but the championship was a game to remember.  The Bruins won 8-7 in extra innings when Austin Booth scored on a Trey Bridis single to center.  The game featured gutty pitching performances from Mike Nasatka and Nate Eikhoff against a very strong hitting New York team.  As we had all weekend, solid defense and timely hitting were the keys to the victory.  The championship game featured excellent sportsmanship by both teams, and the Bruins tip their hats to the parents, coaches, and players from College Point, NY.

Rain at Super NIT

17 May 2009 - After a tough 9-2 loss to the Maryland Baseball Academy, the Bruins faced one of the tournament's two AA teams, cruising to an 8-0 victory.  However, heavy rain over night forced county officials to close the Potomac Lakes Sportsplex, and all Sunday games were cancelled.  The USSSA Northeast Super NIT tournament ended in the order of pool-play seeding, which for the Bruins meant a disappointing 6th place finish.

MBA Comes Back

USSSA 2009 Fastball Freeze 19 April 2009 - After winning both of the pool play games on Saturday, and only allowing one run in the process, the Bruins earned the top seed in this weekend's USSSA Fastball Freeze.  The Bruins cruised in the semi-final, beating the Patriots 9-0, and the team was in excellent position to face off in the Championship against a talented and well-coached squad from the Maryland Baseball Academy.  Bruins starting pitcher Mike Nasatka was one out away from a hard-fought 2-1 victory when the MBA players rose to the challenge.  Inspired by a two-out game-tying homerun my their talented centerfielder, the MBA team exploded for a total of 4 runs and a 5-2 victory.

This game was the second championship showdown against MBA at the VSC.  Last September, the Bruins beat MBA 10-5, and an excellent rivalry is developing between these two talented teams.
